Being Big And Tall On The Southern Oregon Coast

Coos Bay Sky By Brandon Harvey
I have found that there are quite a few people that are big and tall out here around where I live as I get messages and comments about it on a regular basis. So, I figured I’d share my tips on how I deal with things like the rain, wind, and the people in general.
First of all, several places in Oregon are not actually liberal bastions like the media would have you think. You have to learn to coexist with every type of person really, but many areas are fairly rural so don’t think you won’t fit in if you’re very conservative because the Oregon coast is fairly conservative in many parts. Not every city is Portland like people seem to think that have never been here. (I thought similar)
Another thing you have to prepare for is the rain. And it rains a lot, without much else going on besides the wind. Sure, I’ve seen stuff like snow once or twice in about ten years but things like gnarly lighting storms don’t really happen much where I’m at in Coos County. I’d recommend a good pair of shoes and a rain jacket.
Speaking of rain jackets, if you’re new to the area you should learn that there is a difference between rain-proof and rain-resistant. Most of the coats for rain you’ll find are rain-resistant which means they actually can get wet after a certain point. If you were to wear something rain proof, it would have less of an ability to breathe and if you run hot like I do then resistant is the way to go in light or mid tier rain conditions.

It’s a straight up pain to walk around when it’s super rainy, unless you can stay somewhat dry. Here’s a pair of shoes I’d recommend, especially if you love minimalist shoe. These go up to 16.5 wide and you can click the image or this text to go check them out (article continues below):

Another issue you’ll find annoying on the coast is likely the wind. There’s really not much you can do about it besides making sure your coat is zipped so it doesn’t fly around or fill with air and almost lift you. Also make sure you have your hat on tight enough, even with headphones on I’ve almost had my headphones and hat ripped off by the wind. Keep your head downward to keep things from flying off your head and try not to have anything that could fly off on you if it’s not going to be tied down.
A lot of people out here tend to complain about there being people living on the streets. To me, it’s part of this time we’re living in because it’s extremely expensive to get into a rental out here and I don’t mean just like a grand or something it’s going to be at least 2,600 if you want a regular 1 room place and if you’re living outside that’s like asking for a million dollars.
I think overall, as the area has its issues at least the natural features of the USA are still able to shine through in places like the Southern Oregon Coast. We do have issues out here that most cities have, but it’s not a terrible place. Just be sure you are ready to live a bit slower than if you were in a bigger city.
Do you have any advice for people wanting to live on the Oregon Coast?
